bleak rocky cliff shoreThe next morning very early the boat anchored off Hammerfest, the northernmost town of Europe. We went ashore & found it singularly unpicturesque. The houses are wood & brown while most of the shops were simply stocked with souvenirs for tourists so that it was not really a Norwegian town at all. That evening about half past five we reached the North Cape. The horn is curious but the rock is bleak and rather dismally impressive. Quite a few people went ashore but as the sky was overcast & there seemed no prospect of the sun we stayed aboard & waited patiently to see if anything would happen. bleak rocky cliff shore The strange thing about Norway is the telephone & telegraph service. Even on the North Cape there was electric light & wireless telegraphy! We turned in at 12:30, cold & rather disgruntled at the sun. (This page has one missing photo).
