pg 3 to the Arcadian & lunched before setting out in the afternoon to ascend the Digermulkoll. It was very steep & rocky & slippery so Walter and Bill stopped half way up while the Carrs and I went all the way to the top to see a glorious view of snow mountains on one side of the harbour with the Arcadian a mere dot on the other. We slept soundly enough that night despite the sun & the noise. The next afternoon we reached Hyngen where we saw a Lapp encampment. The people are stunted and fat & rather sad looking. The huts are made of mud and twigs & are quite clean inside. There we went up the valley & had tea from the tea-basket. That night there was a dance & the first view of the midnight sun. About half past eleven the sun began to show from through the clouds & at twelve o'clock everyone assembled on the foredeck to watch. It was really beautiful with its lovely blues & violets in the sky. As eight bells rang all the men started to sing "God Save the King"! Could anything be more irrelevant? But despite the artificiality the effect was quite impressive. |
