Mar 1 Volcano has been smoking all day 4 houses burned at 10 PM

Mar 2 Volcano started to throw Lava at 2 AM continued until daybreak I was on guard it was something worth seeing

Mar 3 Volcano is still smoking and the heavens are full of smoke at night we could not see anything.

Mar 4 There is just the least little bit of smoke coming out of the Volcano.

Mar 5 A section of Battery G. 3rd Art came here with a 3 in Hotchkiss gun fired a few shells but done no damage to the niggers.

Mar 6 Artillery expects to have target practice today there is a lot of niggers on the top of a hill we think they want to come back again

Mar 7 There is the crowd on the hill yet they want to come in but are afraid of Major Wise at night there was a couple of houses burned.

Mar 8 Natives still on the hill artillery bombarded an outpost on the other side of river we are starting to build a stockade

Mar 9 Tearing down shacks for stockade few shots fired.

Mar 10 All is quite in town today

Mar 11 A kick was made about our rations being short.

Mar 12 Everything is quite today

Mar 13 A small party under Capt Hart went up the coast and scattered a band of insurgents killing 3 of them

Mar 14 Boat came in with clothes.

Mar 15 Came off guard had a bad storm received part of rations due us

Mar 16 quite

Mar 17 Everybody wearing green ribbon I have some for laces

Mar 18 Mail expected today

Mar 19 No mail, went out after sweet potatoes

Mar 20 Helped the cook make beef hash.

Mar 21 Red hot and dreary.

Mar 22 Took a hike over the hills formed an important outpost overlooking the country.

Mar 23 On guard on outpost the Volcano was flashing fire

Mar 24 All quite

Mar 25 Nothing of importance we are expecting paymaster.

Mar 26 Paymaster is here got three letters from home 1 from Mac. got paid at 9 AM.

Mar 27 All quite fellows playing poker

Mar 28 Canteen is getting most of the fellows money.

Mar 29 This place is getting to be a regular exile.

Mar 30 built a roof on cook house.

Mar 31 Today is a scorcher.
