Around 1900 the marriage to von Rottenburg failed. Marian divorced him and returned to the United States with her children. She also returned to her maiden name. Thus her son was left with the name Phelps Phelps -- to the amusement of subsequent generations.
She later married Theodore Peters with whom she had no issue.
